All of you have been gatehred together in a back room in Dun Mordren. 
 
That's where you are waiting for them to declare wahtever it is you're supposed to do.



Yngvild clanks in, the towering Aesir cleric far from graceful even when not in a weight of full plate armor, and the massive earthbreaker over her shoulder. She settles that near the studiest looking chair then lowers herself down onto it and lounges back. Well as much as you can in armor.



Leisel slips into the room, dirt fresh on her skirts and leggins. She doesn't seem concerned to clean or brush off the dirt, she just simply walks over and takes a seat.



Kojot leans against a wall, the sheathes on his fingerblades peacebound as a show of politeness.



Duncan shuffles his weight akwardly from one foot to the other. He's met a few fellow Khazad-Mornir among all the other visitors to the hold, and as a result has been frequenting the pub inside the city. Along with the occasional campfires outside in the mountains and peaks in the surrounding area. Where he's drunk almost as much ale.



"Please sign here, and here, and here." 
 
Papers are passed out to everyone to sign off on. Disclosure forms and such. "Understand, that this is the last thing we want to do, or the last person we want to work with. But the information he's offered is valid so far as we've been able to tell. It's a rare instance and won't likely be repeated in our lifetimes. Thank the Gods."



"Yngvild Bloodmane, Warrior of Angoron" she says by way of introduction in her deep contralto voice. She glances down suspicously at the paperwork thrust in front of her, reading it carefully before signing anything at all.



"Kojot Wydmy," nods the half-orc desert-wolf to the others as he reviews the forms. Secrecy is a reasonable thing; even the most classified caravans need trustworthy guards.



Stirling picks up the papers in his titanic gauntlets and gives them a thorough once through, black eyes examining the paper and offering the others only a grunt in acknowledgement.



Leisel doesn't seem alarmed, but her eyes move over the other people as things become explained. She signs her papers, her handwriting neat.. for all that she looks like she just climbed out of someone's garden.



The back room may be in Dun Mordren, but it may be an opportunity to leave Dun Mordren. In the alternative, a justification for the khazad to allow some deeper into the city, where dark minds craft dark plots. One rather large and rather white wolf pads inside, sniffing at the confined, stagnant air. Her ears swivel to the pusher of paper and the comments made. Last thing and last person? "Who?" comes the simple, growled question.



Duncan writes his name in blocky script that's vaguely reminiscent of Khazdul runes, only far less precise than most. "Duncan...Stone...smasher," he murmurs as he completes each part. Then he sets down the quill and steps back, hands twitching as if only taking up an axe or bow will wash the feeling from them.



You know, when working with adventurers, you get used to strange things. Like a giant wolf being in the briefing room. Sometimes it's a wolf. Sometimes, it's a giant snake. Other times, it's even weirder than those things. That is why the guildsman just sort of nods slowly nad adds, "Better if you see it for yourselves. The room is warded against all forms of mind control, by the way, so don't be afraid." 
 
And that's when Eurid Barntos walks in. 
 
The Chosen of Thul and one of the most hated men in Alexandria, Eurid Barntos sacked the temple of Vardama when he turned on Her before becoming the Chosen of Thul in Charn and one of the leaders of the Thulite church. Legendry says he's also a vampire. 
 
"Oh, this is too much fun," he says. "But I'll keep this to the point. I understand these things have a way of just going on and on." 
 


"As I said," adds the nervous guild rep, "...he's revealed some potentially vital information, and his only request was... was... /this/."



Duncan stares at the man, clearly not recognizing him but unwilling to admit it in front of the other Alexandrians.



Yngvild's hand reaches for her holy symbol, her eyes narrowing down as she seems to be struggling not to use it in front of the unholy creature "This had better be very. Very. Vital" she rumbles, her almready low voice dropping down further.



Stirling gives the priest of Thul a deadpan look as he unslings his deathray and starts loading shells into, slowly and methodically. "Make it good and make it quick, this thing don't hold too many more shells."



Kojot doesn't undo the peacebindings on his fingerblades, but he does loosen the knots slightly. "This promises to be... /interesting/," he murmurs.



Leisel's small slender hands clench in her lap, knuckles whiten as she maintains control of her expression. Only her lips drawn in a thin line betrays her disregard of the man that stands before them. She catches the small beatle that seems to want to charge from her shoulder, putting him back into a small pocket. "Not now.. " she whispers.



Dire Wolf pans ears, head, and eyes towards the one entering, in that order. There is no growl, only a quiet stare. Whatever his position, whatever the legends of him and his deeds, he is nothing but a pawn in others' games. And what is one temple in one city compared to all of Ea?



Myrana comes in a little late, dark hair mussed in its braids and still anxiously tugging her gloves at the wrists, as if she had to run out the door without putting them on first. Tik tak tak! go the heels of her boots as she shoulders past the door and comes up from behind someone. "I'm terribly sorry," she mumbles. "I had to ask my wife to teleport me here; someone tried to blow up my ba--AAAA! What?! NO." Oh, she's seen the horrific vampire.



"Myrana?! Oh this is just getting /better/," says Barntos, apparently qutie charmed. "Why don't you have a seat, Myrana? I'm sure we can work together." He advances towards her and then puts a grandfatherly kis on her cheek. It's a very polite, fond thing. He even pats her on the shoudler. THen he adds, "There's a beast on its way to Dun Mordren that is, I assure you, not under my control. If you don't stop it, it will kill a gret many dwarves before their time to serve Thul. Go and deliver it the death which is required."



The head of Yngvild's massive hammer comes down hard on the ground beneath as she rests her gaze on the rumoured vampire "Behave" she warns, for what it is worth. That done she scrawls a somewhat messy signature then looks steadily at Barntos, without quite meeting his eyes "What is this beast?"



Dire Wolf now breaks her quiet to snort. It is immediately followed by a chuffing sound, then another. More follow in a series, like a noisy panting. It lasts for several moments before fading.



Leisel seems to be spending most of her time trying to keep the beatle in her pocket. "Yes I know you can take him... now is not the time. Do behave.." she whispers.



Stjepan just stares at Barntos like he just kicked him in the gonads. He doesn't say anything at all. It's probably why he hasn't reacted thus far.



Duncan peers at the others. He tries to remember what precisely was written on the contract that he signed earlier. Finally he offers, "it couldn't hurt to take a look. If this 'beast' really is as dangerous as he says and it won't - or can't - be reasoned with, we might as well take care of it."



Myrana makes a strangulated sound in the back of her throat which is more or less lost in the sound of a loud SPAK! of static and the smoke that starts lifting off of her in sneaky curls. After several seconds of struggling not to burst into flames and only halfway succeeding, she pats out the smoking places on her person and leaves very very stiffly, still sparking and smelling very strongly of ozone on her way out.



As Myrana leaves, he turns back towards the others and intones, "A lovely soul, that one. Now, this beast... It's from afr beneath the earth, roused by something, and it's on its way to an outlying outpost. I do not think the timing coincidence. There are numerous things nibbling on the edegs of Dun Mordren's security, and if they are succesful, Dun Mordren will be required to send more soldiers to protect it's outlying settlements, leaving the summit less defended. That can't happen, now can it? That's where you come in. You're going to head to the outlier, kill the beast, and ensure the summit can proceed unmolested by its deperdations. Is that how this goes? OH, it's just /lovely/." Barntos beams. "I never knew adventuring could be so fun. Now," he adds, "the Guard Post is 27-1. The map will be provided. The beast in question is what you call a 'Ghonhatine'. Some sort of mutated troglodyte and the scavengers that follow in its wake. They're fast, large, and deadly. And apparently have a foul odor."



Stirling operates the slide of his deathray with a loud click, having loaded the last shell, his stare lingering on the dark priest. "Lets get on with it..."


Leisel listens to what he has to say, but remains distrustful, this expression is fully upon her face. The beatle finally has retired to her pocket. "Yes yes.." she looks down at her pocket, "I'll be sure to scoop any up.."



Stjepan nods. "Right. So, wax noseplugs? Or maybe some raw garlic to smear under the nose?"



Yngvild's gaze follows Myrana out. She considers the doorway she left by then turns her gaze to Barntos. Wordlessly she nods, then with a clattering of steel on steel she gets to her feet and slings her hammer over her back waiting for the others to be ready before heading off to the guardpost.



Kojot looks to the others and shrugs. "Unless there's something special about this beast that we need to know, I'm ready," the half-orc remarks.



"I'm afraid you know most everything I know about it. I'd never even heard of the creature, but clearly someone else has," says Barntos with a chuckle and a shrug. "Good luck, gentle adventurers! Come back in one piece!" He does not mean that. His smile is also a little...fangsome. 
 
And then he turns into mist.



GAME: Stirling refreshes spells.



Leisel shivers after the man/creature's disappearance, she glances about then stands, making ready to go. She mutters under her breath, "He only wants it dead, because he can't control it." Shrugging, "Or its a plot to get rid of adventurers..." this she considers.



Stjepan cracks his knuckles. "If he just wanted to kill us, I imagine it wouldn't be hard for him to do so himself. Let's just get this done."



Yngvild claps her hand on Leisel's shoulder in a companionably way, albeit heavy "If it is, I think that vampiric traitor will be shit out of luck. Iron Mountain willing none of us will die this day" she says, her low contralto voice full of self assurance. That said she clanks towards the exit and away.

Leisel smiles up at the taller woman, and follows her out the door. "I'm glad I'm on your side... you related to any mountains?" She asks this quite seriously.

You travel on the well travelled Dun Mordren roads underneath the earth, allowed to go where few humans have ever been, or for that matter, few of any other races. They're not lit, and you have to bring your own lights for your own convenience, and it isn't long before you find your way out to what appears to be the 'Guard Post', a well fortified series of barricades and stone buildings carved out of a chasm in a vast, open cavern. 
 
Out of the darknes, a voice calls, "Halt! Who goes there?" 
 
You were given a password to call to the dwarves, and when given, they let you in to hear what you have to say. Your words will be the first they hear of this situation.



"WE ARE HERE TO KILL THE DAMN TROGLODYTE THING, BUGGER OF IF YOUR NOT HELPING." Stirling calls out loudly. "Damn dwarves."



Autumn facepalms at the declaration and looks around to see if anyone else might be more... fitting to take charge of the explainations and negotiations.



Stjepan says nothing more -- it's all been said. He hides a smile.



"Only in worship" the towering Aesir replies to Leisel. Not being able to see in the dark at the start of their trip Yngvild called out a short prayer and a holy blue light settled on a small carved box she has strapped to her forehead. It doesn't stay still as she looks at the sights all around. She blinks mildly at Stirling's yelling, a faint smile turning one side of her mouth upwards "Maybe you need to work on your diplomacy" she suggests with a shake of her head.



Duncan stomps into the guard post. He takes a quick look around, trying to size up the walls and how much defense they might provide against a giant monster. He's not sure they could stop his own Digger, let alone whatever a 'Ghonhantine' is supposed to be. "Ahh...yeah, what he said." The Khazad points back at Stirling, while also shooting the Arvek a dirty look. "We're here to head off some giant monster and it's brood."



"No my diplomacy is oiled, loaded and ready to go." Stirlign says patting his deathray.



"...uh...what?" 
 
"What in the name of Reos' balls are you talking about?" Nobody has more balls than Reos, so far as many Khazad are concerned.



Dire Wolf pads out into the open gladly. Following her amusement at Barntos' thought that he could control beasts. "If IT wants us to stop the creature, maybe we should not try..."



Autumn clears her throat "We have gotten information that a large and dangerous Troglodyte of unknown properties has been heading in this direction. We intend to deal with the dangerous and evil beast to keep it from causing further harm. <Insert password here> was shared with us so that we may pass. Thank you for your time, but as you can guess we are in a hurry to deal with this monster." <khazdul>



"Secret intel says that there's a monster heading this direction," Kojot explains as he carefully rubs his face. "We're here to deal with it so that you can focus on keeping an eye out for other trouble."



Duncan's beard practically bristles. He thought he was being perfectly clear. "Yes yes...a giant burrowing monster. And it's brood. Exactly what your so-called 'guard post' is here to guard against!" he's nearly bellowing by the end, but calms himself down visibly. "Only, if your pretty little guard post here gets ruined, it will compromise the defense of the entire city, won't it? So WE--" he gestures at the rest of the party, adding another glare at Stirling, "--are going to try to head it off." He glances at the other (no doubt more pampered) Khazad to see how they're taking all this.



Leisel nods slowly to Aesir, "I was so hoping you were.. they are so pleasant to talk to." She kneels down, placing her hand on the rocky floor closing her eyes. "Speak easy.. share with me thy secrets... what comes?" She waits, as the others talk amongst themselves, and to the guards. "Lend us your strength.. or do you share with the beast that comes?" She tilts her head, wondering at this second thought.



Yngvild casts a sidelong glance down at Leisel but doesn't comment behold a lift of her somewhat shaggy brows. There is a clatter of metal on metal as she folds her arms across her chest and lets the others discuss things with the guard post for the moment.



"...you have a dispatch from Dun Mordren? Strange that they'd share it with you, but you did have the pass key. That's enough for us." A nod. 
 
"Battle stations, men. We have to be ready." 
 
You're invite into the exterior of the fortifications, and great spotlights, powered by mana, begin to search the dark corners of the cavern -- light is useful, as it can disorient creatures not accustomed to having a bright light shined on them under the ground like this. It's an advantage to the Khazad in this case, rather than relying on their own excellent dark vision purely.



Leisel lays down onto the rock floor, placing her face to the ground as if communing with it. "Speak with me..." she coaxes, feeling for vibrations in the ground. "I am earth... I am one with the word.." she whispers.



Yngvild smiles a touch as the area is lit up, a moment's concentration dispelling her own light. Being a large red-haired Cleric she stands out enough without adding a glowing headband. That done she hefts her hammer and waits patiently.

Dire Wolf turns nose and eyes to the now lit area before them. She could ask of the creature mentioned, but doesn't. That would admit a lack of knowledge on her part.



Duncan blinks at the brightness as the spotlights go off. He gives a reluctant grunt of approval and then looks around for his mount. Settling himself atop the saddle, he unlimbers his spears, one long and one short. Then he nudges the Digger over to a place where they can charge forth once the monsters show themselves.



Stjepan gets out his sword, and rests it on his shoulder. Then he does a creditable job of looking around.



Autumn peers out at the cavern, but her gaze keeps drifting back to the spotlights. She smiles and casts mutters a spell to scan the spotlights out of curiousity to see what colleges and enchantments went into making them.

"There!" 
 
In the distance, a pale, white creature can be seen under a spotlight. Troglodytes. More of them. 
 
Soon, there's /dozens/ of them swarming the line of sight of the spotlight, and still more. 
 
"Seems you folk were right. To arms!" 
 
Ballista are readied, and the dwarves open fire with crossbows and muskets on the slinking, lurking troglodyes... 
 
But they aren't prepared for what happens next. The wide open cavern has a tall, high, high roof and all of you just barely notice the creature as it /drops from the damn ceiling/ down onto you. It's big. Real big. Easily the size of an ogre, if not bigger. And that? That is /hunched over/. 
 
And it gets worse from there. Claws and teeth and... the /smell/. 

Oh gods. That smell. It's worse than a recently fed Otyugh. It immediately grabs one of the plate-wearing Khazadi warriors and /rips him in half' with a single, powerful scrunching sound.

Leisel rolls quickly to her feet, "Heard that..." giving the rocky ground a thankfull pat. She doesn't bother brushing the dirt from her face that she got off the floor. "Oh that stinks...!" she screws up her face.

Duncan grimaces at the smell. "This is worse than a pile of rotting undead!" he complains. Of course Duncan has experienced such before, and fought through it. And he manages to do so today as well. Knowing that most of his allies are having an even harder time of it, he bellows at the monster in an attempt to draw his attenion. A much more reserved word murmured to the Digger, and it charges. As they approach Duncan lowers his long spear, holding couched against his shoulder like a lance...only for it to scrape uselessly across the creature's side.

A growl begins in the wolf's throat, then turns suddenly into a gag when the stench hits her. She swallows down the venison attempting to escape and backpedals. It isn;'t feat, but a calculated withdrawl. Her fur then ripples and and seems to part for black hide that grows from beneath and beyond it, swelling even larger and weigt shifting to extend upwards and futher fore and aft. Half is due to a large heavy tail. The other is taken by the even more massive head which is nearly all maw and even larger teeth. A puddle of water on the stone ground ripples.

Dire Wolf grows in mass and muscle, surface thickening into stippled dark hide and jaw expanding into a massive reptilian maw filled with vicious teeth.

Yngvild turns decidedly green as she gets a full whiff of the scent "Angoran's sacred arse" she curses in a weak voice as her pale flesh shows the green off delightfully. She almost loses her grip on her hammer as she staggers away, pausing to lose her last meal and probably the one before that in a messy puddle, until she gets a lungful of mercifully clear(ish) air "Fuck me crossways" she curses whilst weakly straightening up.

Duncan is clawed by the horrid beast, nearly knocked from his saddle. But it's the attack on the Digger that causes Duncan to erupt in rage. He leans forward and plunges the smaller spear into the monster's side, this time able to pierce it's hide. His Digger tries to chomp down on the Ghonhatine's leg but can't get a good bite in.

Allosaurus roars and now returns to where she was, and then some. She makes a short leap at then end, leading with the very large maw of teeth. They don't find flesh, but the forearms, not as puny as larger cousins, tear into flesh and hindlegs also find some purchase. Toeclaws hook in as she all but envelops the thing with several tons of annoyed sauropd.

The sounds of combat fill the room. Troglodytes are now battling dwarves and the area is entirely filled with overpowering stench. A few crossbow bolts harmlessly batter off the creature's side.

Yngvild is probably down to what she was ate last week as the greenish looking Aesir pauses to toss her cookies again. Or her ale, mead and unidentifiable meat bits. And carrot, because there is always carrot. Still she keeps moving, managing to position herself outside of the stench zone and close to her partymates.

With the stench gone from his nostrils, Kojot walks up and slashes the monster. Not a very graceful hit, but certainly a solid one!

Allosaurus digs in to keep hold of her prey parts of her five ton bulk shifting unnaturally to crush against the creature. Meanwhile, her hind legs kick at its belly, almost cat-like. Only large, with less fur, and much less cuteness.

The thing is grabbed onto by the Allosaurs, so it tries to do the one thing it can to force it to let go before it gets pinned. 
 
It opens its slavering, slimey, teeth filled mouth and VOMITS ON HER. 
 
Chunks of dead dwarf and worse spew out onto her in a string of vile bile (it rhymes) and worse. Have digest skulls pour out onto her. Apparently, it ate a caravan o nits way here.

"Angoron's giant swinging cock" grunts Yngvild as she straightens up. She pauses to wipe her mouth with the back of her hand then lifts a somewhat hoarse voice in prayer "ANGORON WITNESS" she bellows to the heavens. Or at least the top of the cavern. A blue blow forms in her eyes and ass eh slams her hammer down it flares out brightly over her companions, soothing their wounds as the crack echoes around the sounds of the battle.



Allosaurus manages to handle the stench. Having the thing vomit while she's biting at it is different altogether. The ...thing is released as her limbs spasm and she gags up fur and hooves from her most recent meal. Too bad the other creature probably doesn't care that it gets more regurgitated flesh on it.

Meanwhile, the combat is going. There's the loud twang of crossbows and even a louder mechancial sound of ballista firing into the distance. A few dwarves are nearby, but are NOT getting in the way of the fight you're in -- they can't afford it whne they're busy fighting only slightly less overpoweringly smelly Troglodytes. There's a lot of vomiting going on, but so far, the barricades are holding as the creatures scrabble over them only to be cut down by sharp dwarven axes.

The spell hits Duncan and leaves him empowered, while the creature let's loose it's full fury on Kojot, wounding him with a bite somewhat significantly. It's starting to wea down.

Yngvild seems to be recovering from the bout of smell induced nausea, although the pale Aesir still looks a bit green around the gills. So to speak. Either way she shows no sign of weakness as she hoists her huge hammer up towards the mount and bellows her rather demanding sounding prayer "ANGORON WITNESS" she demands in a booming voice "BLESS MY MIGHTY COMPANIONS AND CURSE OUR ENEMIES. LET US BE STRONG AND BRAVE IN YOUR SIGHT!"

Kojot tears into the monster, a combination of slashes follwed with a vicious bladed uppercut. "I can shred you faster than you can bite me," the desert-wolf half-orc snarls.

Duncan tosses his shorter spear to one side, so that he can grip the longer one in both hands. He spins it once over his head and then tries to stab the creature, repeatedly. He's bellowing almost constantly now, not even aware of what's going on all around him, only focused on hurting the monster in front of him. Which amkes it all the more frustrating when he can't quite get through it's thick hide.

Yngvild's faintly chill blue eyes sweep the battlefield again, carefully considered despite her rather boisterous behaviour. She takes a step forward, raising that hammer up again "ANGORON SHOW THEM YOU WRATH" he demands in a voice that echoes to the heavens. Her hammer starts to glow with that bright blue light, a light that burst forth with eye searing power as she steps forward, scorching the creature and sending it crumpling to the ground, and blinding those of evil caught in the burst.



And so it is done. 
 
The beast is fallen, and that leaves only the surging trogs to be dealt with. 
 
The stink is still even worse now that it's roasted by the smite, but you'll be able to help the dwarvves to repel the creatures. 
 
All in all, not a bad day's work, right?



Autumn shakes her head and blinks, then chants a small cantrip trying to clear the smell from her nose. She says "Good grief, that thing smelled worse than roadkill in the summer that's boiled in the sun for a week." Since the thing is dead, she tries to clear the air with puffs of perfume with waves of her hand. Looking over, she checks to see if the dwarves need a hand with the smaller troglodytes.



Duncan when the monster falls, Duncan glares wide-eyed at it for a few moments. Then suddenly his rage leaves him all at once. Along with all of the otherworldly strength and stamina that came with it. He nearly falls off of his Digger. But when that the sounds of the continuing battle penetrate his fatigue, Duncan he rouses himself. He pulls his axe off of his back. And then he urges his Digger to move in the direction of the other Khazad and their battle.



Stjepan is as-of-yet unharmed, just really fucking stanky, so he trots off to help the dwarves.



Kojot kicks the beast for good measure, then runs over to help engage the trogs, his fingerblades carving a swath of pain, distraction, and perilous footing. He might not be racking up a kill count, but he's definitely softening them up for the rest of the defenders!



One of the dwarves comes oevr to it and looks at the corpse and promptly loses his lunch. The stink, you know.



Yngvild's bopoming voice lifts in a hymn to Angoron. Best that can be said is she makes up in volume and enthusiasm what she lacks in pitch and general musical ability. Still her hammer and spells aid the dwarves.



Eventuall, the Troglodytes, without their secret weapon, are driven back. 
 
It's bloody (and smelly) and disgusting (and really smelly), but they are indeed driven back, leaving the dwarves grateful for your assistance. All that's left now is the healing and dealing with the bodies. 
 
It's going to be a long night. Ever smelled burnt Trog?
