- Summary: Their usual Aquisitioners AWOL the temple of Eluna turns to adventurers
- APL: 4

- Encounter 2: 1 Fighter 4, 2 Rogue 3, CR 5
Eluna's temple stands near her brother's, and trees of the grove often wander their vines that way, only to be chased away by the priests--much as two children might battle in the back of a cart. Eluna's temple is composed of solemn, alabaster pillars and marble, as ancient as Her brother's though more austerely kept. Each pillar represents a phase of the moon, over which She has dominion. Their surface is scribed with the words of ancient dreams, those first recorded in the known world, when mankind was first awakening to their significance.
In the center of the temple lies a grand pool. Serene in its surface, it reflects the open sky overhead, though the temple is covered by an arched ceiling. At all times within the surface may the stars be seen. Surrounding this pool are a number of tasseled rugs, on which petitioners sit and meditate, or seek counsel for interpretation of their dreams.
Warriors of Daeus are often found here, providing guards where the wards of Eluna prefer introspection and contemplation. These fighters bear dual symbols, signifying the tie between divine father and divine daughter. They and the priests here speak in quiet voices, reminiscent of Eluna's place as the Dreaming Goddess.
To the north of the temple is a modest library, its function primarily in the way of records--recording of dreams, of meditation, of theories of the proper use of magic--teachings directly opposed by the Shadow Goddess, Taara. It is this last shift that has seen an increase in the number of guards among the temple, and the increased adoption of the Star of Tears among the belts of Seers.
Tim is a fan of Eluna, he is a wizard after all. Its just that whole stuffy temple religious structure thing that bothered him. He prefers to go wherever his stomach leads, today though, he figures he can lend a hand, and earn enough to buy himself something nice to eat. So, the portly elf is waiting to see what the job is about, while snacking on some pastries he picked up on the way here...mmmm, donuts.
The half-sil scoundrel has been hanging around the temple district recently for reasons largely unknown. It certaintly isnt one of his usual haunts. Still, his presense means he ovehears more of the districts rumours, and priests do love to gossip reguardless of what their moral stance.
"And now we are here," comes a sullen voice behind the rotund elf, its owner a masked Veyshanti woman hunched as though to ward off a blow, a small, green scorpion clinging to her ear with its stinger placed against the woman's neck. "And the request will be answered, stupid little bug, and now it will threaten me no further. Tchah, perhaps I should have eaten you when first I lay eyes upon you..." Trailing off into a sour, indistinct mumble, Alba waits for whoever among the Temple intends to send her on her way to complete the task.
Is that a Goblin? In plate armor with REos' symbol on it? Yes, yes it is. Smhtly is here, of coure, apparently more thn happy to help with various problems that anyone might have. Paladins. All /good/ and stuff. And helpful. It's the worst.
A robed cleric appears at precisely the appointed time. An elf like many of Eluna's clergy she gives an impression of being young, despite the agelessness of her people. She offers a gracious smile to the adventurers "You are the ones sent by the guild I presume, please walk this way" she says with a gracious gesture as she herself leads the way through the temple to one of the back rooms.
Within is a small office which despite having a plethora of books, scrolls and scraps of paper still somehow manages to seem orderly. Behind it is another Elf, one who in opposition to the party's guide gives the impression of great age. She arises and offers a elegant smile "Thank you my dear" she says to the acolyte by way of dismissal then turns to the adventurers "Silver Lady's blessings be on you, and be welcome to her temple" she says whilst graciously motioning to some chairs opposite. That done she turns around and pulls a rolled map from one of the pigeon holes "I trust you were given the gist of the task, a messenger from the mother temple is overdue and as Aquisitioner Fiadias and his amanuenses are, well unavailable we would like you to retrieve a particular gem"
Tim quickly finds a chair and settles down, he nods as the woman speaks. "Basics of the task yes." He finishes whatever pastry he was eating, then looks at his hands, covered in a bit of glaze, which he cleans off with a quick use of the prestidigatation spell.
The scorpion relents, allowing itself to be picked up by a silent, tentacle-like lock of Alba's hair and deposited on the back of her neck. Following the acolyte to the cleric's office, she finds an unoccupied corner of the room to crouch in, mask turning to look over the collected tomes and scrolls with mild interest.
Latenat's nostrils flare slightly when he enters the room. The smells of mercury, ink and old woods prevalent in the desmene of the holy. No chair for him however and the slender scoundrel finds a bookcase to lean up against, raising an eyebrow knowingly when it is mentioned that the Aquisitioner is currently unavailable, though his grey eyes focus more when their target is mentioned.
"Yes, of course," says Smyhtly. A goblin typically has a shriller, higher pitched voice. Smythly is working to keep his lower. "I am happy to assist. Whatever is required of me, I shall deliver." He's definitely ready to do so.
"Our brother was last seen here..." the aged cleric says as she unfurls the map and points to a small nearby village "But failed to arrive in the city at the apointed time. There are rumors of bandits in the area. Of course there always is around this city" she says with a somewhat wry twist of her lips. With that she offers the map over "The gem is a ruby in appearance, about the size of the palm of my hand and cut into an egg type shape. I will be entirely safe to handle" she assures the group then offers a smile "Any questions?"
Tim nods, "No questions then. Go in, find the guy and the gem, so on so forth, which of course nothign will go right, it never does after all."
"If it is large and glimmers," the masked Veyshanti says, "bandits will seek to make it their own. Hnf... No question. It shall be done."
"Yes." Latenat's first word cuts through the air of the office, is it his imagination but is it heavier in here,"When are you going to recover the Aquisitioner?" he says this without rancor nor inflection and continues on,"Bandits will always choose places where they can strike from, with a bit of privacy so they can hide. If your brother has been waylaid by bandits, they will have made a trail to a road that can set up ambushes from. This may be both easy and difficult at the same time." he would chuckle, as is the half-sil's wont, but this is neither the time nor the place.
"We will locate your missing priest if it is at all possible for us to do so, and retrieve the missing items. If bandits have indeed taken it, we will endeavour to bring them to justice," says Smyhtly, solemnly.
"You have my word."
"I have found in my time..." the elder Elf says a little sternly to Latenat someone managing to give the impression of looking down her nose at the taller half-sil "...that Aquisitioners have ways of recovering themselves." That said she looks to the others and makes the sign of the crescent moon "Sky-Singer's blessings be upon you all. We look forward to your return and that of the stone" and with that polite dismissal she sits back down and pulls out another report and a pen.
Tim glances at Lat, and then the elf lady, and he just shrugs, getting to his feet. "Ok, well, we should be off then right. Work to be done and all that."
Alba's mask turns toward Latenat, then back at the priestess' snippy reply, and with a snort uncoils herself, slinking after the wizard. "Then the sooner the rock is retrieved, the sooner she shall have only her people to worry for. Hn... come."
Latenat hardly seems ruffled by the priestly ire, but notes the reaction with a dispassionate observation abiet nodding agreeably at the same time,"Well, we should probably get going. To... the city gates. Outside and all that." he notes as he levers himself away from the bookpace and looking utterly at ease begins to jander his way towards the doors to begin their journey
The trip towards the village is entirely uneventful. The party passes several promising ambush spots, and even what looks like a well disguised trail. But nothing. It is perhaps starting to look like the thing is a bust, but there are still some miles to go until the village and the last sighting of the courier.

Round One - Init 23.
It is now Alba's turn! t3 is next!
You paged Alba with 'Gross ;) Okay the shape seems to be 30 foot away.'
You paged Alba with '20 at the paizo site?'
GAME: Alba casts Vomit Swarm. Caster Level: 4 DC: 15
You paged Alba with 'So just move towards or can swarms charge?'
You paged Alba with 'Alrighty, pose it :)'
You have left channel TPK.
Alba holds a fist up as the party travels onward, her mask orienting on a very particular patch of undergrowth to one side of the road. "Hsst! There..." That's all the warning the rest of the party gets as her throat bulges grotesquely, her pet scorpion skittering down to stuff itself into her hip-pouch. Pushing up her mask enough to uncover her face, she rears back... and with a truly stomach-turning noise, a horrific stream of thumb-sized spiders pours forth from her mouth, gathering into a great clump and swarming toward the shape hidden by the foliage.

There is a stream of really foul cursing that escapes the shape, a mix of tradespeak and oruch as the swarm of scuttling horrors heads towards it. A spear flies from the bushes but the cast flies wide, burying itself in the road.
It is now t1's turn! Smythly is next!
GAME: Yngvild rolls 1d20+3: (8)+3: 11
Another spear flies from the hidden depths of the forest around the path, a large rough looking figure revealed as he draws a greataxe from behind his back as the spear flies wide, disappearing into the bushes on the other side.
GAME: Yngvild advances the initiative order.
Round One - Init 10.
It is now Smythly's turn! t2 is next!
Moving towrds the front of the gathered, Smythly immediately has his massive sledgehammer in his hands.
"Reos, your servant shall see justice done! You, thugs, may surrender immediately and your lives will be spared so that you may face justice from the proper authorities. SURRENDER AT ONCE!"
...coming from a goblin, this is probably not a very intimidating speech.
GAME: Yngvild rolls 1d20+3: (2)+3: 5
A reply comes by the way of a spear flung from a third position at the right hand side of the path. Again the cast flies wide, but it is followed by a string of curses as to the rather unlikely paring of species that produced the goblin paladin, and the rather physicaly improbable method of mating. And another half orc swapping spear for axe becomes visible.

It is now R1's turn! Alba is next!
The portly elf looks around, and grunts, "Ahh, well, at least we didn't have to wait." He raise a bit of glitter in a hand, speaking some words and then tossing it. It streaks forth to explode at the pair, covering them in glitter and blinding them.
Turning an ambush on its head is difficult at the best of times, Latenat accepts that. But neither is he going to be caught flat-footed, and the half-sil draws his weapons and leaps into action after the first spears are flung. Rapier and parrying dagger tests the bandit's skills with alternate strikes, not with finesse but a methodical form that doesnt land a blow but is well balanced in both attack and defense.

A regular arrow flies from one of the treetops, managing only to strike the earth in front of Smythly. Whoever shot it is discplined enough not to swear but there is a faint creaking from a tree as another arrow is drawn and nocked ready.

The spiders sent to their target, Alba draws a beetle the size of her palm from her pouch. Fingers tense for a moment, then with a sickening wet *crunch,* its shell gives way and coats her hand in yellow-white ichor. Her ick-stained hand lashes out, fingertips jabbing Smythly's back and turning, smearing the goo into a circle shape on the paladin's fine, fancy chainmail. Stepping back with a low chuckle, she turns to search out the sniper, as the magic takes hold of Smythly and causes him to grow.
GAME: Yngvild rolls 1d100: (47): 47
Covered in glittter, blinded and now the oruch bandit can feel the swarm of spiders climbing all over him. A rather girlish scream escapes the figure as he flails about with his greataxe, which rather proves -not- to be the ideal zomgspidercrawlingoveroveryou weapon, and he barely manages not to take his own foot off as he swings wildly.

Round Two - Init 7.
It is now Latenat's turn! Tim is next!
"You call that a weapon? Its about as blunt as your intellect you slimy-nosed gout attractant." Landau hisses, the axeblade having stipped a slice of flesh long his forarm. It is bleeding, but hasnt slowed his movements yet as the half-sil dilletante geats the measure of his Oruch opponent and begins tightening his defenses playing the delaying tactic whilst his compatriots mop up the rest of the bandits. The slender rogue seems a poor match for the greataxe wielding fighter, but seems oddly unfazed. And perhaps he knows that backing down or balking only causes them to come back at you even harder.

The poor, abused bandit... Only just klonked upside the head, and suddenly dozens of bladelike spidery teeth shear into his flesh. Between the concussion and the new horror, the poor orc is overcome, his terrified shrieks trailing off as his body slumps to the ground. Meanwhile, Alba, searching for the sniper, brings the thumb of her clean hand to her mouth, biting down hard until blood runs down the corner of her mouth. Smearing her wounded thumb across the forehead of her mask, the streak glimmers darkly, a look of unnatural vitality growing in her bearing.
The half orc almost seems to be in a barbaric rage as he swings around the huge axe. It seems almost unfair, the weight of metal and oak versus slim rapier and main guache but despite this he cannot seem to get through the rogue's defense.

Never parrying a blow directly but using a combination of deflections and adroit footwork Latenat waves back and forth showing an agility that he customarily doesnt reveal, staying ahead of the greataxe blade by hairsbreadths with each massive swing. Dancing backward only to dive forward beneath the humongous metal edge that seeks his life the half sil keeps his his stream of insults to fuel the heedless assault the half-orc inflicts apon him,"Ha! Just what I would expect from a Gorbellied folly-fallen canker-blossom!" he spits, the fire in his forearm reminding him not to take the bandit lightly even as he eggs him on.

Cupping her hands under her mouth, she manages a brief tic at the corners of her mouth that might be mistaken for a smile. "So... it will tell us where the gem it has stolen is. It will be glad to tell this to us..." Drawing in a breath, she looses a sigh, accompanied by a brief flicker of blood-colored fire. "...Else it shall die in pain and helpless, struggling and screaming for its freedom."

Tim grimaces, as the man starts to run the elf throws out more glittery dust that explodes. While the man isnt blinded....he sure is shiney and easy to see.
GAME: Alba rolls survival: (10)+6: 16
"Come!" Alba says, dropping back to the ground and loping off after the archer. "He will have a hole to crawl into, close! Perhaps the hole contains the rock, or soon it will contain a wounded and desperate bandit! Run!"
GAME: Latenat rolls surival+3: (10)+surival+3: 13
Tim shakes his head, "I....do not run after folks." He uses his bonded ring to cast the mount spell, a horse appearing next to him, saddle and all. He starts to climb up in it, cause the fat man wouldn't catch anyone on foot.
GAME: Latenat rolls survival +3: (9)+10+3: 22
The terrified human leaves a trail that even a blind goblin could follow, caring more about getting the hell away than concealing his trail. So it is easy to follow through the woods. Not to mention he actually stays on the path. After a time "You -what-?" comes a rather high pitched feminine voice from somewhere up ahead "I put you in charge of them because I thought you were smarter than those half orc morons....this is too late but...." with that there is a nasty gurgling sound, then an eerie silence.

In the clearing can bee seen the bloodied corpse of the human the aprty was chasing, with a dageer buried in his throat. Next to it is a tony blonde and innocent looking halfling woman who bursts into tears as she hears the noisy folks stomping through the woods, throwing herself over the body in a seeming fit of dispair as she wails.

"Archer aloft in the oak tree!" Latenat warns with a shout, drawing his weapons as he combat rolls into the clearing and comes up with his weapons in a defensive posture, parrying darggerheald at the fore whilst the rapier assumes the 'scorpions sting' position.
Smyhtly rushes up to the tree in question. "You get down there! Or, uh, I'll shake you out!" He tries to shake the tree.
It is an oak tree. Even as strong as he is, it hardly matters.
"GET DOWN!"
GAME: Yngvild rolls 1d20+7: (11)+7: 18
The only reply from the seemingly calm sniper is an arrow shot downwards at the Paladin shaking the tree. The shot is true, kind of, but it skitters off Smythly's armor and down to lodge on the loam beneath.

Now that they are upon their quarry... and he is dead... the new tableau gives Alba pause, for a moment. The woman looks confusingly like a child, and is crying over the bandit's corpse... yet doesn't seem to be taking cover from the archers. A problem that can be put to the question later. For now, the archers. Drawing a sharp, steel-tipped javelin, Alba pelts across the clearing, turning once to launch the missile at the archer Smythly's currently accosting. Her trajectory, however, puts her across the clearing and the other archer. Someone, after all, has to take care of the distant foes.
Still sitting on his horse, the portly elf begins to incant arcane words. He starts working on what is obviously a longer spell, the incantion long and drawn out.

Phwizz! The sound of an arrow aimed for him goes past a slightly pointed ear as Latenat acrobatically avoids the archer's attack whilst still facing those in the clearing. Danger senses tingling the half sil is on guard and is acting as shield to those more of a casterly inclination. He does know which end of a weapon is which, and wears leathers which he supposes volunterrs him for the role, despite being far from a hero.

On her way to the archer's position, the flap of her hip pouch peeks open, the top of a small cloth bag nudging its way out. Despite the fact the tanglefoot bag missed the halfling, the tiny woman looks up as all the grief and fear flees from her face to be replaced with a snarl of pure malignancy "You fucking bitch" she snarls in the voice before as the bloodstained dagger that was in the humans throat is hurled at the back of the passing witch, sinking in as the tiny woman gets to her feet and draws another.

Either the other Elf has more testicular fortitude than his companion, or he is not as worried by things. Certainly the lack of demons helps. "Ssssah!" Alba hisses as the arrow sinks deep into the side of her belly just under her ribs, and snatches a spherical red vial from her pouch. "YOUR HEAD IN MY MOUTH!" she roars in defiance, hurling the flask at the elf in the tree... which smacks him dead in the chest, shattering and coating him in a sheet of sticky fire. Latenat has been in fights like this many times, mean nasty and the difference between life and death is the razor's edge. The interplay of weapons is fast and furious, the half-sil deflecting knife blows with his main gauche and flickering back strikes with the sap he has in his hands... having dropped his rapier to do so. Until finallly... a blow! The wooden trudgeon raps hard across the side of the halfings head, though she scores counterattack in the doing.
"You are going to regret messing with my band you oversized tosspot" Snarls the hafling as she reels back from the blow to her head. She hisses and darts foward, scoring a line across the rogues thigh but followup from the second dagger misses entirely.

As weapons are thrown down, Alba's hair hauls the halfling backwards, shaking the coccoon a couple times for emphasis. "WHERE IS IT?!" the voice behind the mask roars. "THE STONE STOLEN FROM THE TEMPLES, TELL US WHERE YOU HAVE IT."
"What the lady with the creepy hair said," says Smythly, believing she's way scarier than he is. By far.
Tim gestures, and the demon starts to vanish, but not before it gives Smythly a very very rude gesture. Tim grunts, looking around. "Ok, yea, lets get the stone and go home."
Latenat smirks at the halfling ignoring the spittle, and showboats with a flourish of his paired weapons, he gave as well as he got and he has seen street toughs like this bandit a million times before,"The brother of Eluna, we want his personal effects. You will hand them over."
Being shaken all around does unfortuante things to the halfling's stomach, turning green she opens her mouth and spews out her last meal all over Alba's hair. Cough and choking she manages to nod in the direction of a tent, within is a chest that has the scant personaly belongings of a wandering cleric of Eluna, and a pouch that contants a gemstone that matches the description given.
Alba may be, in the broadest general terms, a benevolent human being, but mercy is not given to the halfling. Once her stomach is finished being emotied, the coccoon simply scrapes back and forth in the dirt, scraping away the mess, then reels the blond in. "So," Alba murmurs, placing her hands on either side of the halfling's face -- one coated in dried and flaking bug guts, the other in rust-colored, dried blood, "Will this one wish to make the journey to Alexandria an easy road? It will find if it walks softly, it will be treated softly. If it struggles... heh.... Perhaps it may be, that Sarathrazz may express his displeasure to a new face." As she speaks, a small green scorpion crawls up her side, skittering down her arm and waving its pincers near the poor Lucht's nose.
