  • Title: Village in Peril, again
  • Emitter: Yngvild
  • Characters: Tiassa, Silmeria, Kojot, Kiroth
  • Place: Outside Alexandria
  • Time: Saturday August 29, 2015
  • Summary: A village has gone off the radar, so to speak
  • APL: 8
  • Encounter 1: 3 Hill Giants, CR 10

As pleasant as the journey out to the village is, the fact that the call had sounded as desperate as it had has put a pall on Silmeria's habitual smile. The closer the party gets to the hamlet, the more serious the Inquisitor becomes. By this point, her removing and cleaning her spectacles is very firmly placed in the 'nervous tic' box, and she's checked the breech of her pistol at least half a dozen times. Just, apparently, to be sure.

The sound of clanking follows Kiroth as he walks along with the others. He has on his full plate and sword and shield. He looks around as they travel towards this missing village. Occasionally his eyes will glow with a soft white golden light as he checks for any evil presences around them.

Tiasa moves along watching the area around them. The large sith would prefer something deep in the woods or jungle, but this will have to work just as well.

Kojot flexes his hands, the sheathes of his fingerblades loosely tied. The specifics are different, but the style is the same: make sure a location is secured and safe for locals and travellers. The mithril fullplate lightly clinks as he walks, the scraps of fur adorning it making the half-oruch seem almost more like a desert-wolf.

The closer the party gets to the village the more rocky the terrain gets. It verges on mountainous as they get to the site itself. Or at least what is left of it. It looks like there was perhaps some kind of avalanche as there are several large boulders in the ruins of various houses, but others look like they were knocked down, or even stomped on. Certainly the place is well trashed.

Tiasa blinks a little and shakes her head, "I wonder." she starts to get a closer look, looking for tracks and signs this might not have been natural.

You paged (Kojot, Silmeria, Tiasa) with 'Okay there are no debris trails behind the rather large boulders, as if they had been flung somehow.'

Tiasa shakes her head, "I do not think it was natural." she says and looks around for more sign. She is considering trying to get smells.

You paged Kojot with 'Okay trails. One mess of standardish sized humanoid that seem to have been running away towards another town, or a least moving fast. And one HUGE set of prints that lead further into the mountains.'

The animal pens have been smashed to pieces, and bits of blood and fur are scattered about but it there are no large remains.

"I worry," Silmeria echoes, circling around the other way from Tiasa, peering at the boulders, and the rocky slope nearby. A small line forms between her eyebrows, the corners of her mouth pulling down. "There's no debris behind these stones," she says after a moment, tipping her head back to look up the slope. "....D'you think they were thrown?"

Kojot pauses. "Looks like the people fled," he remarks, pointing out the foot- and boot-prints leading swiftly away from town. "And given the size of these 'prints over here..."

He points out a set of HUGE footprints heading towards the mountain. "These rocks were probably thrown."

Tiasa moves over to take a better look at the tracks. See if she can tell how old, and maybe exactly what caused it.

Kiroth moves over the rough terrain and he frowns at what he sees. "Looks like something attacked here." He sees the huge footprints, "Probably giants, they are known for their boulder throwing." He says as he draws his sword and has his shield ready.

"Oh dear," Silmeria murmurs, pistol and sword now at the ready. "...I suppose, then, we'll need to climb the mountain?" With that, the Inquisitor searches the slope for a trail, something that could be used to head after the giant thieves.

You paged Tiasa with 'Tracks date back about to the time when the village stopped responding, a few days old perhaps. It looks like the large ones went back and forth a few times towards the animal pens.'

Tiasa nods, "The trackss would see to be having something to do with village gone, about as old as them missing."

Kiroth hmms, "They could have been taken and being held by the giants. We should hurry to try to follow and catch up with them unless something else is a foot and these giant footprints are a rouse."

"If they're a ruse, they're a startlingly impractical one," Silmeria says, nodding to the tracks. "Come... let's go."

The day is slowly heating up as the party follows the trail into a rather wide canyon, the 'walls' about 50 foot up. Heat starts to radiate from the rocks as it twists and turns, likely along the line of some ancient long dried up river.

You paged (Kojot, Tiasa, Silmeria) with 'Just around the corner you can hear the sounds of something trying to be still and hide. But not very well. More disturbingly perhaps are similiar noises from up high on either side of the Canyon'

Kiroth looks around and he blinks the sweat out of his eyes. Being in full plate is great for protection not so great against the heat. He continues to look around blinking hard every now and then as the sweat stings his eyes.

Huh? (Type "help" for help.)

Kojot shakes the sheathes off of his fingerblades. "We have company," he growls, nodding towards the corner.

Silmeria slips around Tiasa, rapping her knuckles on Kojot's pauldron. Waving a hand to get TIasa's attention, she points ahead, then, worried, up to either side of the lip of the canyon. The Inquisitor seems to have noticed something, and is deeply concerned.

Can tell there is something just ahead and she shakes her head. "Something around the bend." she hisses softly and then starts to change.

With a popping of joints and cracking of bones, the Sith-Makar called Tiasa starts to change. Her body seems to swell and stretch. She drops down to all fours as the things she carries are absorbed into her new form. When all is said and done, standing in her place is a Large Monitor Lizard.

Kojot walks past the corner, moving to where he can see while still being seen.

And behind the corner is not surprisingly a rather scruffy looking giant. He bellows something in Jotun and launches a boulder as Kojot heads around, which smashes into the canyon wall in a shower of stone chips. Another below echoes about as he pulls a crude but huge club and slams it into the ground tauntingly.

The Inquisitor, it seems, has been waiting for the giants to show themselves. The moment one at the canyon lip roars and hurls its missile at the party, Silmeria wheels, pointing her elaborate pistol up, tilting her head, and muttering a prayer of vengeance. The trigger is pulled, and the barrel erups with silver flame, the explosion backed by the peal of some distant brass bell, as her shot sinks into the giant's massive arm.

The giant hit by the bullet lets loose a thunderous cry of pain, as a third one appears on the opposite side of the canyon. He tosses a large rock down at the paladin making a show of himself, but the bright and shiny armor stops any damage, although it does scuff it a bit.

MonitorLizard growls with rage as she calls on the spirits of nature to grant her their primal fury. Silmeria's spectacles gleam harshly in the midday light, a faint gray radiance limning her form. Her hook-bladed word is raised to point at the one she'd scored a shot on, as she lifts her chin. "The Gray Lady is waiting for you, thief and murderer! Her blade shall carve your misdeeds upon your soul!" Rearing back, she lunges forward, drawing a vicious slash in the air, and a translucent gray copy of her weapon, much more ornate and engraved with harpstrings upon its back edge, spins up the canyon and barely missing the giant's face as it shrieks past.

If the giant atop the hill even speaks tradespeak is doubtful. Still he seems disinclined to come down and face the shiny humanoid. However it seems the compelling magic has worked as the next boulder is launched right at Kiroth, and shatters at his feet this time.

Round Three - Init 19.

It is now HG3's turn! MonitorLizard is next!

I don't see that here.

The 5' 7" half-orc in front of you appears to take after his human parent. Kojot's facial structure suggests that he might be from Veyshan, but the most striking things are his clothes and the way he carries himself. Beyond his armor, his outfit is a melange of scraps of leather and fur, and combined with his slightly predatory stance the effect is similar to that of a desert-wolf. This is complemented by the fingerblade gauntlets of orcish design; the blades seem to be as natural to him as if they were extensions of his body.

This seems to have taxed his limited brain capacity enough so that his two swings bounce off his opponents armour without much effect.

"My friends," Silmeria says, as a bullet disappears from her bandoleer, and chambers itself into her gun, "perhaps we should figure out a means of bringing them down to our level... more or less?" Touching the barrel of the gun to her forehead, she breathes a soft sequence of words, and the engravings glimmer to life, the silver light shining fron within hinting at a fire barely contained by the weapon's metal shell.

Kojot fires a few more arrows, this time bracketing the giant. Good if you're a mathematician, but not so much for actually defeating the giant.

And the other giant kind of returns the favour, his launched boulder missing Kojot, with a string of nasty curses in Jotun. Most of which are anatomicaly unlikely if not impossible.

Round Seven - Init 1.

It is now HG2's turn! MonitorLizard is next!

Hill Giants are known for many things. Courage is decidely not one of them. As his two companions are slain nastily the remaning one looks rather uncertain. The solid hit from Silmeria makes up his mind and the towering figure turns and runs away as fast as its long legs can carry it, vanishing from the view of those down in the canyon.

GAME: NEW ROUND!

Yngvild advances the initiative order.

Round Eight - Init 16.

Round Eight - Init 16.

It is now Kojot's turn! HG1 is next!

GAME: MonitorLizard ends her rage.

GAME: Yngvild removes the timestop.

Timestop by Yngvild has left.

GAME: You remove the timestop.

Two giants dead, one fled. There is a trail of large footprints down the Canyon and also back at the village the humanoid ones.

Silmeria sighs, holstering her gun, eyes flickering among the tracks found on the trail. "...It looks like some of the villagers fled... but we should follow the giants' trail back, to see if any remained captured. And to see to the remains, if we're too late."

Kojot nods. "Best to deal with the threat first," he agrees.

Kiroth nods, "That sounds like a plan to me let's deal with the threat first."

Following the trail the canyon widens up into something of a clearing. The cave is more easily located by smell than sight, Hill Giants not known for their cleanliness. A combination of a privy in the heat and non too fresh carcasses carries clearly across. There are some bodies scattered in a heap near the entrance, non appearing to be human.

"Oh dear Lady," Silmeria moans, tugging a whiskey-soaked handkerchief from her sleeve and pressing it to her nose. "Honestly? Do they *like* the smell of rot and filth?" Sighing, the bespectacled Inquisitor picks her way to the entrance of the cave, examining the bodies by sight, for the moment, to see what they once were.

You paged Silmeria with 'All are livestock, seems that is what the giants were after'

You paged Silmeria with 'And some shinies to be determined by staff :)'

Kojot keeps an eye out for any other wandering giants.

Kiroth looks around as they get to the clearing. He nods to Silmeria, "Yes they do." He takes a moment and calls upon the blessing of his blade and it starts to go as he asks for it to be made holy. "Let's finish off these giants."

At the moment it seems the camp is abandoned, at least there are no sights nor sounds of giants moving about. Just some nasty remnants of their inhabitation.

"Lets do," Silmeria says, rising to her feet. "It seems as though it was the livestock they were after... And any pretties that caught their eye." Sword and pistol both out, because one never knows if the giant will *always* hang around on a canyon lip. "Which way did it go then, d'you know?"

Kiroth looks around, "They don't look to be around here." He frowns, "We should have gone the other way, they could have gone chasing after the humans if they escaped."

Kojot shrugs. "If that last giant ran off instead of sticking around, he probably couldn't catch up with the people who fled," he points out. "Still, we should probably check the villager's escape route, just to make sure it's safe."

"THere aren't terribly much of them left, and that last looked like he was about to leave a yellow trail in his wake," Silmeria notes, nodding in agreement with Kojot and picking through the animal corpses, setting aside what coin and trinkets she can find. "Help me sort this, then we'll follow the escapees' trail. They deserve to have *some* of their valuable returned.

Kiroth nods a little bit, "Agreed I'd be happy to help." He lets the glow of his blade die down before he sheathes his weapon.

There is a fair amount of loot, and no sign of any further giants. If followed the trail leads to a town about a half days travel away, with an influx of refugees who report being awoken by boulders through their houses. Some injuries, but no deaths aside from pretty much all their livestock.
