- Summary: Mikilos and Kira visit Cryosanthia where she is recovering in the Temple of Daeus. She has been cured of the plague ooze, but requires some rest and residual healing, which her previous evening's escapades did not help. The sith is bruised, enough that is shows through her scales, but otherwise in a good mood. Mikilos details the recent meeting with the Queen of Air and Darkness, and his acquisition of Mortal Death, the blade of the Queen's champion. They discuss their next potential steps, more appeals to other fae royalty, strike at Salina's other supports, or move directly against the tower. The mage is suddenly called away, leaving the two women to discuss things further. Kira's participation in the negotiations, and her loss of an eye. Cryo explains as best she can her Fae Mistress' nature, and how unnatural it is. Cryo wishes that there was some other option, but believes there is no hope, only strange scenarios were perhaps a future Salina has reformed and is acting against her past self, and is now fated to experience true death. The pair leave, to find Cryo's cihuaa and convince him to heal her and rest himself, and then intend to walk the Temple Square and get some air.

The temple of the Sun Lord glitters golden beneath the same. Rather than walls, the majority of the temple is composed of what appears at first blush to be a raised round platform made of one of the largest slabs of marble likely in existence. Columns rise into the air as if to hold some massive ceiling, though instead of a normal ceiling, one finds the deep blue sky, studded by a disconcertingly close canopy of bright stars. One should not worry, however, as the rain never falls, and the wind never blows on this particular temple, but for a gentle breeze, whatever the weather outside may be.
Despite the austerity of the columns, warmth suffuses the grounds. A grand, marble statue of the Shining Knight stands a the center, a hand outstretched in benediction. Beside Him, the statue of Althea, their hands clasped in love. The central position of the temple to the others gives view to all of their children, and the two look upon one another with the solemnity of love that has been the center of so many tales and legends.
Masterfully designed mana lamps provide further soft, golden lightning where needed, their pedestals carved in the form of the Dragons of Light, over which Daeus is said to have dominion in His form of Draco Solis. Majesty, justice, and welcome suffuse the temple grounds. Around the central temple are a series of smaller buildings, each with a simple function and form. One houses the sacred book depicting some of the earliest known translations of the Laws of Light, which pilgrims from near and far come to visit. Another houses the well-appointed quarters of the Sunguards, and among all the ground bristle the Sunblades.

The Temple of Daeus still has many patients from the recent giant ooze attack. Most of the casualties who suffered only acid burns have been healed with magic and traditional means. The plague victims, and the badly injured, remain. They have overflowed into certain public areas, but the regular worship services and functions have been restored.
Cryosanthia still has a room down a side passage from the main temple area. A guard at the door, who mostly watches. He knocks as people approach and the door is opened for them.
The white-scale sith-makar stands, holding it open. She is a contrast, physically looking beaten, in movements she seems energized and positive. There's a lot of bruising around her eyes, along her snout, and her eyes themselves are quite dark. Her scales seem bright and the room smells good. She makes a small courtsey, "Peace on your Nests."
Mikilos smiles, returning the bow carefully. "And unto yours. How are you today?" The wizard moves a little awkwardly, his pack slung over one shoulder, a small basket carried by the same arm. His other arm left free and unused. "I brought some sweet rolls, and tea."
Kira is pleased to see that worship and services are still active; far less so to see so many ill or injured. After learning that the white sith was here being treated (again?) after her past recovery certainly warranted a visit to seek how she was. The mixed feelings are continued when she arrives at Cryosanthia's room: she looks to be feeling well, but also looks ...like she isn't entirely well.
Kira returns the curtsey with her own, and a smile. "Peace on yours, and yours," she adds, to Mikilos. Whom she hadn't immediately recognized, or heavily noticed, before. "I'm not disturbing you, I hope?"
"Mikilos! So nice to see you. This one is cured of the plague, it was not a pleasant treatment. Zeke will cast some healing spells later and I should be perfect. Until then, some well earned aches." The bruised sith steps back, making a sweeping gesture for the mage to enter, indicating some seats near a table. The air seems cooler around Cryosanthia, her exhales are often visible. She's wearing her layered wizard robes.
"Kira! No, not disturbing, please come in. I've been resting. Last night with Merek was..." She shakes her head, "I'll get some cups, Mikilos has brought sweetrolls and tea. We can catch up."
Mikilos nods. "I quite understand. Physically recovered but still aching myself. Have you heard what happened with the Queen of Air and Darkness?" He nods politely to Kira, looking her over with some concern. "And you? Are you recovered?"
Kira takes a slight step to her left once inside, to put everyone else more towards her right, in hopes that it makes things a bit easier. "Oh? That is wonderful news! I'm so glad you are cured, and I'm sorry that it was so unpleasant. I could ease your aches, if you wished?"
Turning some to Mikilos, she nods, still smiling, though her cheeks redden some. "I am healed, but still getting used to the change."
Cryosanthia blinks, straightens, "The Queen of Air and Darkness? No. This one has not heard a thing. You've met with her, she attacked, will she assist us?"
The sith moves over, pulling out seats for the others to sit, bringing the tea service over so there will be cups and bowls. There is a stiffness to her movements, some lingering pain, but she's still graceful in them. Settling down she looks at the others.
Cryo tilts her head towards Kira, she smiles, "I would love to take you up on that, but I'm saving that healing for Zeke. He's not been taking care of himself and I'm going to insist he use up his spells and nap otherwise he'll run out to treat others. If you have spells to spare, the healers here are quite loaded."
The sith sets out a bowl and a cup for each, then asks, "Changes? Did the plague leave you with a weird magic ability?"
Mikilos smiles and nods, setting out a smaller basket filled with still warm rolls, and a small enchanted pot that keeps it's contents hot; in this case, a mild mint tea. "The meeting was a success, though not without difficulties. The prices demanded were higher than I ancicipated, but we got what was needed." He sighs, only a little wistful. "The Queen was... enchanting... in a dark and terrible sort of way. I was caught up in her spell, literally. Any case, in the bargining process, she cut the snowflake scar off my arm, not gently. The flesh is recovered, but still weak and tender."
Kira shakes her head at Cryosanthia's first question. "No, nothing so strange, and I would be happy to help the healers here." After a moment of thought, her smile widens further and she adds, not-quite-conspiratorial, "even heal the healers, if needed." She turns to Mikilos again, perhaps inadvertently giving Cryosanthia a view of her patched left eye. "We were worried that you might try to follow her, stay with her, or harm yourself for her." Her lips purse. "There was far too much suffering there."
"That's... that's good!" Cryosanthia eagerly hears this news. She has both hands, gloved, on the table with one on top of the other. Her tail thumps behind her. She reaches out and pats the table near Mikilos then withdraws her hand to rest, "When I wrote you were smitten with a Fae Queen I didn't mean it come true. I want you to be happy. We'll get you woo-ing when these troubles are over. I would have liked to have come along. I had a lot of pain to share, but was in too much pain to attend. I'm glad you've lost your ownership mark."
The palescale sits back a little, her expression more serious and her tone cautionary, "Her influence may still be in your mind, Mikilos. She is deep in mine. I've attacked Seldan again, wounding him horribly." Her hands twitch on the table.
The moment passes and she smiles at Kira, "Sadly Zeke can't stand being touched, or I'd ask you to help me hold him down. If he returns though, yes, I'll block the door, you heal him. Wait, were you there also Kira? Did you see the Queen?"
Mikilos nods to Kira. "I would have. I knew, -knew- better, but was still under her influce. I've literally written a book on charms, I -know- how they work... but knowing doesn't matter. That's how they go." He grins, nodding to Cryo. "Your work was actually quite helpful. When I realized I was -trying- to turn my life into a romance plot, was enough of a shock to jolt me out of it, at least for a little while. And yes, the physucal mark is gone, and I -think- the magic behind it, but I'm not confidant on that." He considers a moment. "-Something- happened when the Queen took the mark, but I wasn't in a state of mind to really grasp it."
"Yes, I was there," Kira turns back to Cryosanthia and nods. "It was ... not pleasant." Back to Mikilos. "You knew that she wanted ... pain." Even the word makes her wince. "You were all very brave to share that with her, and the rest of us. I hope that she took that pain from you completely."
"I imagine the Fae Royalty are a little like gods, having their own domains, and their power would do things to another's, though what I can't imagine. I hope it's overall positive, and this one is glad her story helped! And... yes, the influence. I'm still coming to grips with the things I've done, that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time. Like being drunk, and not." Cryosanthia exhales, pulling her feet in underneath her, "It sounds precarious. What did she give, will she move against Her, teach you how to make the weapon?"
She pours herself some mint tea into a bowl, brings it up and inhales the scent for a long time before taking a sip. Setting it down, the sith squints and peers at Kira, "Is there something wrong with your face? Everything is still blurry to me. I'm sorry if you suffered."
Mikilos nods. "I don't think she will take action one way or another, unless one of the Vows given is broken. They are, as you say, a bit like gods, having ancient treaties in play to not act against each other directly. Seldan has the Fruit Of Memory, I know next to nothing about it. The Law of the Hunt is simplier than I hoped, the Wild Hunt makes prey of Oath Breakers and Kin Slayers." He falls quiet for a moment. "And I wield Mortal Dread. A blade forged, so it's said, by the gods of the fae, thousands of years ago. It's shown up in dozens of tales, weilded by the Queen of Night, or in a few, by her champion. So near as I can tell, I am the third to ever hold it."
Kira nods to Mikilos. "I hope that her intervention in this is done; that the fruit will restore everyone who lost memories..." she pauses and exhales a small sigh, "... and that we never need use that weapon, though it is prudent that we have it."
Her smile returns as she looks back to Cryosanthia. "My only suffering was that others had to. It is my Calling to ease and prevent suffering and pain. Anything you did while not yourself is not your fault. I'm sure that all understand that, and don't blame you." Real fear takes hold of Cryosanthia. For a moment it's like their first meeting in the Temple of Vardama, she goes still, her breath held, she stares at him, the pupils in her darkened eyes widen. Her voice is careful and quiet, "Oh Mikilos, you're her Champion now? Be careful with that power. This one has met a Claw of the Death Singing Dragon, what they weild can break mortal minds. What you have now is terrifying. Don't... don't close out friends who will keep you sane."
Mention of the Fruit also makes the sith warily turn her head towards Kira. Can she hope? Will it be safe to know. Cryo exhales and nods slowly, "Kira... I know what you say, but... it is myself. My thoughts, my evil impulses. I have a stronger touch of the blood of dragons, if I don't resist that heritage I act in cruel and brutal ways. I wish I could believe I'm not responsible at all, but I flip so easily to other's control and... seem to enjoy it. I am someone else's weapon at times, this frightens me."
"As for my Mistress, The Mistress," She corrects herself quickly, "I wish there was another way but don't think there is. She is not... human, mortal... even the word to describe how alien she is, is lacking. Very much like the Queen of Air and Darkness I suspect in motivation, what you saw there, so is She."
Mikilos nods. "Actions under magical influence aren't yours. You -did- them, but you didn't -mean- them. And in such matters, intention is important." He blinks at Cyros words, and shakes his haed, then hesitates. "No, I'm not her Champion, not in any formal sence." He considers. "I don't -think- in any sort of informal way either. Endless Winter isn't a target of her will, just a person who happens to be part of a bargin made."
"There are friends who can keep you safe," Kira assures Cryo, returning the sith's bit of wisdom back to her, "if you let them. Don't you close them out, either." Another small sigh follows and she nods. "If Endless Winter is like the other Queen..." as she said, the weapon is prudent, even if she still hopes.
Mikilos receives a long look of concern, as she well remembers how he acted, then. "I hope that you are not still bound to her, in any way. The bargain could have been much worse."
"Are you sure the story won't change to be so? How would the Bards sing it, the pattern is there..." Cryosanthia cautions. She can certainly think of fun ways to re-weave it in a story, though, perhaps she shouldn't. "Thanks, regarding intentions. That is important."
Her tail flicks and curls to wrap the other way around her stool. Clearly she's still thinking about something. "Merek's intentions seem to have become evil. From what I've seen, what I've heard, I worry his black dragon aspect has taken over. He's... greedy in what he wants. We've seen him to the Temple of Eluna so they can heal his mind, but... something, how he was with the Wee Queen, in the sewers, it's worrisome."
The palescale smiles at Kira, "This one has heard that advice before, and intends to. I've been wrapped up in myself too much and ignoring my friends. You are one, Mikilos, I hope you know, and I hope we can build on what we have Kira. I will be there for you, when you need me. I hope."
"Mikilos, do you still plan to seek the King of Light and Illusion, or the Queen of the Sluagh? I hesitate to think what either might ask, but wonder, if his insanity is somehow Her doing, or if the Queen... well, the Sluagh are known for lost, slimy things, secrets? Something might have been buried that she knows about. I still wonder if Zahier's wife is somehow tied up in all of this."
Mikilos shakes his head. "The enchantment is broken." He considers. "I -remember- loving her, and it was very real to me at the time. But I don't think she holds any real interest in me. The Vows I made are still in effect, I'll need to return the blade when Endless Winter is dead."
He looks to Cryo and shakes his head again. "As much as I'd love to learn the secret of crafting such weapons, I very much doubt it's going to happen. And with Mortal Dread, it's no longer needed. The prices have been too high. And the King seem to have one firm feature he clings to... blameing elves, the Lost Ones, for the general decline of the fae." He shrugs. "Which isn't entirely unreasonable."
Kira returns the smile to Cryosanthia. "Thank you, and I hope so, too. I'll always help however I can." Her smile dims some to concern and she looks to Mikilos at questions of conversing or bargaining with other fae. This worry fades at his assurances, though, as she very much agrees. Which then brings her to ask, "Do you know what we shall do next?"
"Do you think he'd be happy with an apology?" The sith laughs, grinning with teeth, shaking her head, "So, like the Wee Queen with the 'Lost Ones', but worse. Well this one has no desire to meet King Knickersnatchers, the Queen of Slugs, perhaps."
Cryo looks between the two of them, "Would it be safe to send proxies, or would that simply be endangering them? Instruct others. The Dragonfather told Zeke it's possible to wrest her from the Tower, they might have hints to help that, or evidence of oath-breaking for the hunt?"
"First I think we should get as many back to fighting strength as possible without long delays. Acting against Her Ice Demon might be wise, one less strength for her to draw on. Durrankar informed he eliminated a nest of Kol's spawn, so that's fewer forces on her side as well. She has struck terribly at Seldan, Faran, you know about the Soldier's Defense. The Mistress has noticed those opposing her, taken steps and hostages." Her cup is empty now, Cryo picks up one of the warm buns, which doesn't stay warm in her hand for long.
Mikilos shakes his head. "There's the Fruit, and whatever information it's use might provide. There's still much we don't know, but I think we've come to a point where we need to act, despite not knowing everything." He nods to Cryo, and blinks. "I knew Kol was gone, but thought his brood lingered. That is good news. And there is the demon Eclavdran. Whatever role he plays is not over." Kira only now thinks to take a sip from the tea that she let cool too long. "Some of the spawn may have escaped, but most didn't. We were able to spare one who hadn't yet turned." A fresh sigh. "So many, too many, have suffered...."
The mention of Seldan, and just before that, Merek, especially gnaw at her. "I hope that Merek gets the aid he needs, and Seldan... we need to find and return his mother. She should never have been taken, or have been ill to begin with..." She sets her cup down as it starts to shake.
The palescale sith nods slowly, pouring herself some more tea in a bowl. She nudges it to rotate a little with her finger, "If we force her from the tower perhaps he will be able to get at her and we can choose which evil is the lesser and assist it defeating the other."
Cryosanthia gazes at the wall for a while, sitting quietly, "hopefully there is something of value in my lost memories, to make that sacrifice worth it. I'd like to feel..." She lets her words trail off while she curls her toes around the legs of her stool. She lets it go.
She turns back to Kira, her hands close on her bowl of tea. "Merek... wishes to bring Kol back, is angry we killed him and he didn't, hates that he is gone. These are not good impulses. He has power and might accomplish something. This one hopes his mind is healed. He was a good friend, he gave me these sleeves. They were useful in the tower. And Seldan's mother... this one is not sure whether to wish she lives or is now dead. I... know... what She might do... Seldan can not."
Mikilos nods in agreement. "Forcing her out of the Tower would certainly break much of her power, but I doubt it would be enough. I'm confidant only her death will end the matter, and even that not fully. Parts in motion won't stop just because she's gone. The Plague won't just disappear when she's dead, but hopefully ther's something in the Tower that can tell us how to stop it."
Kira's face pales at the sith's news, though she gives a little nod. "I heard Merek's ...rant. He's in pain, and angry, and does't know how to heal himself. I helped take him to the Seers, but I should check on him..."
She pauses, listening to Mikilos, but her eye goes to Cryo again. Another delay before she asks, rather hesitantly, "What do you know of her? What is it she might do?"
Cryosanthia fixes her gaze on Kira. Something changes in her manner, her posture. The room feels a lot colder even though the temperature hasn't changed. The way the sith-makar moves is chilling, suggesting great power and indifference. Her voice is efficient, without much expression, sounding scientific. For those who have met Salina, the impression is striking. "My friend Faran has a giant riding spider. Looking into that spider's eyes you will find more warmth and affection than you will in Her. There is Nothing relateable in her. I spent a human lifetime attempting to establish a connection, change her mind. That I'm here is proof I failed. She is like a child with great power, missing emotions. Will pull the limbs off bugs to see what they do. Sees us as bugs. Perhaps vivisect his mother to satisfy her curiosity about aging. See if she can duplicate Zahier's constructs with living beings. This one has cleaned up many failed experiments. Parts, of bodies."
The white-scale shudders and shakes it off herself, looking away, embarassed. Some things she can only say with careful, horrible control, which she clearly learned from her Fae Mistress. "I'm sorry, don't tell him, at all. Hope should live. Mikilos, I've told you there are two of Her? This may be a contingency plan of hers, some way to cheat a True Death."
Mikilos blinks, perking up slightly, head tilted as if listening. "Hrmmm, excuse me, something's happening at the shop. Likely just a customer, but I need to go and make sure. I'll return later." The wizard rises, taking a second to adjust his pack, leaving the rolls and tea. "It was a pleasure talking with you both. I have heard there is as second, perhaps a past or future version of herself. It will be dealt with. And perahps there is yet hope for Her, but I very much doubt it." A soft murmur, and the elf is gone. No smoke, no flash of light, just... gone.
Kira blinks. Half-blinks? She then appears to do her best impression of Cryosanthia as her face pales further. It nearly matches her robes for a moment, with only the one blue eye and her hair to break up the monochrome. She doesn't even manage a nod to acknowledge Mikilos' departure.
She is silent and still a long few moments before she nods, slightly. "I won't tell him, at all. He's suffered far too much already."
Cryosanthia nods slowly, "This one apologizes for sharing, but you must know Her." She looks at the spot where Mikilos vanished, exhaling slowly, "Despite all this I don't hate her. I'm angry at her actions and the tragedy she's caused, but it's like hating the ocean, or a shark. It's her Nature. There is no malice, no understanding. When I say She is empty, nothing, I mean it. What one expects is not there. She has to be stopped. I feel sad thinking of her. I wish there was..."
The sith falls silent. She reaches for her bowl of tea without taking her eyes off the space where Mikilos was. Gently, she shakes her head. "I don't know how there might be hope. Could I have succeeded? And her future self is acting against her past self? That what we've seen as cruel taunts are failed apologies? Then we would be bringing True Death to the good one. All the Magic in the World cannot undo Tragedy. What can she mean by that, what are we supposed to understand when it seems she is enacting it. I struggle with it Kira. Why would I stay so long with her if I was failing? Was it only her promise to return me unharmed that allowed me to? Did I manage to enkindle an empty in her? All the evidence... is confusing, suggests I failed, that there is no hope."
The sith keeps shaking her head slowly.
The color returns to Kira's features, lit by her resuming and blooming smile. A hand reflexively reaches for the sith. "There is ALWAYS hope. If she knows tragedy, then she is not so unfathomable as everyone claims. I think you must have noticed something, and you tried. That's what matters. But if you were able to connect with her, or influence her in any way... that is success. If not, trying is never a failure."
The sith lets her hand be taken. She nods at Kira's words. She seems despondent, as if they're hard to believe. "I will try to see it that way. Perhaps if the fruit is for me or I get memories back another way I'll know for sure. Right now at best I can only warn, don't be niave with Her. What you've seen of other Fae is also missing with Her, mercy is unknown and kindness seems to mean a plaything or death. And She casually charms minds the way the Queen of Air and Darkness seemed to have been able to."
"The Plague, the Suffering..." Cryosanthia shakes her head. Some things are too big to feel, too big to understand. Her Mistresses' indifference is one of those. She reaches for a bun.
Cryo smiles oddly, sounding as if she's making a joke, "On the bright side, I've got pretty lights." Kira gives the hand a squeeze, then seems reluctant to release it. "I don't think I'll ever understand the suffering... but I don't need to to try and stop it. I only know it needs to stop."
She eyes the buns, though doesn't reach for one. "And I need to bring his mother back to him. They both deserve that, whatever happened."
The sith nods slowly. Looks at the buns, back at Kira, "Have one, they'll only get cold. Faran... She took her parents too. From their research camp in the Desolation. Her reach is far. I hope they're all returned. I fear... possibilities."
"It has to stop. Perhaps Mikilos is right and we know enough... I don't know. You're aware of all the pieces, Zahier's Tower? The Constructs, the Oozes, the Demon Lord and other demons? The people vanishing quietly?"
Kira takes one, just so it doesn't go to waste, though she takes more nibble than bite. "I'm sorry to hear about her parents. We will find them, too." She then shakes her head.
"I know less than most do, I think. I've been tending the ill and wounded, not seeking out the cause or cures." A sigh. "I should've done so much more... Maybe then much of this wouldn't have happened. Faran's parents would not be gone, the Soldier's Defense wouldn't have been attacked, Seldan's mother wouldn't have been ill..."
"You shouldn't blame yourself. She learned of Faran's parents while she was being cured, the Soldier's Defense happened as soon as Kol was killed. Only if it was stopped years ago could some of that have been avoided, and then I'm not sure it would have." Cryosanthia says, reaching out to take Kira's hands, holding them gently. She squeezes a little with her fingers, and her touch is cool. "This one has been doing some research, let me give you a quick overview."
Cryosanthia explains all the connections she's been able to determine. Zahier, his tower and constructs, the strange magical death of his wife. The ooze, his creation, that repairs his tower and was further corrupted then spread through Alexandria and out in the wilderness. His constructs, masterful works, further changed by Salina to incorporate a cold theme, and powered by the ooze. The tower, that travels space and time, was in Hell and a temporary prison for the Demon Duke Eclavdran. The adventurers who encountered Zahier, Salina. Her strange and generally neutral appearances. The disappearance and demons, and the way the ooze has evolved.
The white-scale sith finishes the length explanation with a smile, "I have maps and books here and in the research rooms, and I'm sure I'm not a construct. They, bleed blue, and I, do not."
Kira takes this all in, nodding, though Cryo's assurance and information don't seem to dissuade her worry. She waits for several breaths, lips pursing. "I was there when Seldan and his mother were attacked by the ooze. I pulled her out of it... but I wasn't fast enough. That's when she became ill."
"Please don't blame yourself. I saw the look in Seldan's eyes. He blames himself for not trying to heal her. She is right in that sense, all the magic can't bring back a missed opportunity. We can only strive to do better, walking forward."
The whitescale sith stands, holds out her hand, "Come, let's go look for my cihuaa or perhaps check on Merek, it will feel like motion. I feel I've worn the aches and bruises long enough to not take the healing for granted."
The sith grins, tail swaying. "Let's go."
Kira nods, still concerned, though she can't deny the wisdom in looking ahead. And striving to move that way, as well. Then her smile re-blooms as she stands and takes the hand. "Yes, let's, and thank you."
Cryosanthia nods, striding carefully across the room to the door and waiting for Kira. She lets the paladin exit first, nods to the guard, and starts with the other down the hallway to the temple, "Of course. Thank you for the sacrifice you made for me. It was appreciated even if I wasted it the next day."
"Let's see what's out there."
