PrP: Breeding Grounds 2
After dealing with the group of reefclaws that attacked them on the docks, and seeing to the injured fisherman who, judging by his injuries, is fortunate indeed to have gotten away with his life, the group splits.The fisherman is being tended by the village healer, and the more badly injured among you split off to rest and repair or heal as appropriate. Meanwhile, it seems the Guild has sent some help. Magical support in the persons of Pips and Charis were something of an afterthought on the part of the Guild, but at least they thought of it, and you two now find yourselves in a small fishing village about half a day's ride outside of Alexandria, along the southern coast.
You still have to locate and destroy the nest of reefclaws, which is likely somewhere near the docks if the fisherman was at all accurate.

Pips, carrying his massively backpack fit for a giantborn, wanders into the town to join the others. He is smiling, ready for another glorious day of work. He doesn't remember much of what the Guild said the job was about. Probably because he wasn't listening. He figures someone will tell him what to do, after all! He waddles up to the other adventurers, waving cheerfully, "Greetings! The Guild sent you some backup! What seems to be the issue?"

Charis comes onto the scene just behind Pips. The two didnt really talk much on the way to the village as the lizard tends to keep to himself. Upon reaching the other group of adventures he folds his arms across his scaled chest. "So what do we have going on that the guild decided to send back up?"
"Oh thank you, my Lady," sighs a bespectacled young woman at the tavern's porch, wearing an ornately-etched gray breastplate with the black scaled of Vardama painted onto her right pauldron. Turning her gaze from the sky to Pips and Charis, she smiles brightly, approaching the arcanists with an outstretched hand. "There's been a rather large problem with reefclaws, my friends; the fishing village can, well, barely fish. You'd think that might not be such a terrible thing, but, you should have seen what happened to the Wargolem that'd come with us. Not to mention, we still have to locate the nest, which is what Master Taro is working at now." This last, said with a nod toward the great grey Oruch, currently prowling the docks.
‘’You paged Taro with 'You find their marks - eel-like bodies and great claws digging dents in the sand -- in the sand along the water's edge not too far away. Indications are, though, that the creatures return to the water. You also find the remains of half a giant crab, shell cracked and eaten out.’’’

Taro returns to where Silmeria is and then nods on greeting to the new arrivals. "I see signs of them everywhere but they lead to the water." He thinks for a moment and then adds, "A giant crab too - are those normal for these waters?" He looks around for the nearest villager. "Perhaps we can try the 'bait' plan again."

Pips claps his hands excitedly, "Oh, great! I mean, not great because that is horrible but I'm glad that you folks are already on top of it! Not that I don't want to do more work, but-" He begins to ramble for awhile before seeing a funny shaped cloud and losing himself in thought mid-sentence. He is obviously easily distracted and doesn't seem to notice that Taro has already returned and given a report.

Charis turns to Taro and gives the Ourch a slight nod. "So I see, If you like I'll go for a little swim under the water to see if I can find the prey in question. I'll leave it your hands since you are the first on seen."
"I'd... rather if we have to set someone out as bait," Silmeria says, clearing her throat, "it be one of us. Best not to put the villagers in danger when we don't have to, after all, and personally I'd prefer we stay where we can support one ano... sir? Sir?" Reaching out, she gives Pips' shoulder a sharp nudge. "Focus, please? We're trying to figure out how to find their nest, if you've any ideas."
Taro purses his lips. "I am sure that the crab I saw was eaten by the Reefclaws," he says after a moment. "But they might find lizard just as tasty." He gives Charis a look of speculation. Then he gesutes towards Silmeria. "Are you willing to draw them out? Just lead them to where the water is shallow enough for the rest of us to walk. Then we can finish them off."

Pips snaps out of his daze as Silmeria shakes him, looking about, "Hmmm? Oh, right! Sorry, I was thinking of clouds." He begins digging through his pack, looking for anything useful. He throws out some rope, smoeksticks, sunrods, and an assortment of other junk. "Any of this useful?"
Taro sets his axe down next to the pier and then looks down, fingering the edge of his armor. Finally he grunts and turns towards the water. "I'll go with you," he offers to Charis. He takes a step in that direction then pauses at Pips' stash. He looks from the pack to the halfling and back again, a few times.
Charis nods a bit to Taro. "Alright we'll both be bait then." the lizard man states looking over at the pile Pips is creating. "Perhaps we can can tie ourselves off in case of trouble. You know like real bait?"
"'Scouting,' I think is more like it," Silmeria says diffidently... but as Pips unloads his stash, her demeanor brightens considerably. "...Oh, perfect! And good idea about the rope, but make sure to come back when you're at the end, all right? And take one of these," she says, scooping up a pair of sunrods, handing one each to the volunteer swimmers. "It'll be hard to miss the light from those underwater, after all."

Taro sticks a sunrod through his belt, snaps the rope tightly between his feet to test its strength, then turns to Charis. "Are you ready?"
Pips looks happy that his random items were indeed useful. He grabs one of the ropes, keeping it loose in his hands so as to not impede movement for the swimmers. "Good luck!"
Charis nods as he takes off his cloak letting it hit the floor and secures the sun rod in his belt. Then he grasps the end of one rope tying it around his waist. "Lets go." he states turning and heading toward the water.
Silmeria carries the other rope to the dock, looping it around a support post, then a couple of times around her ankle as she settles down on the planking. Drawing her pistol from its holster, she unclips a well-loved toolkit from her bandolier, and sets about fixing the weapon up to be watertight and functional. After all, just because she's not underwater now, doesn't mean things're likely to stay that way.
Taro wades a few steps into the water, then a few more. Once he's far enough he ducks his head under to take a quick look around, while still standing. Finally he leans forward and begins to swim. Once he can no longer feel the ground beneath his feat he takes a deep breath and then dives.

The waters around the docks aren't all that deep -- this is really an inlet of relatively calm water that is good for fishing and so forth but is too shallow for anything much bigger than a fishing skiff. The waters are /cold/, shockingly so, but you're both able to swim despite a chill taht takes your breath away -- you will not be able to stay in these waters long at all. The location of the beach where the crab was is pretty easy to spot sa a sandy slope under the water, but Taro spots something else -- there's some sort of sandy hollow beneath the boards of the docks.
Taro peers in that direction. He turns towards Charis and waves his arms to get the Sith's attention, then points out the hollow. A moment later he grabs his rope, holds it up, then gestures in the direction it's leading. Taro points at both Charis and himself, then repeats the gesture in the direction of the rope.
Charis gets the general idea of Taro's hand signals. He peers into the directions of the sandy hollow before turning around heading back towards the shore. Hopefully thats the nest, since theres only so much rope.

Below the pair on the docks, they can see the lit figures moving around below them in the water. Then, Silmeria spots something else ... sinuous shadows in the light. Eel-like shadows.
The pair in the water below can see them much more clearly -- two reefclaws, swimming out from the underwater sandy hollow. You've got company!

Silmeria's head snaps up, eyes widening as she spots a pair of shadows in the water. "Reefclaws!" she cries, scrabbling to her feet and tying off the rope to the post. "Hurry, we have to help them!" And with that, the Vardaman dives into the water, heedless of armor, dress, and everything else that makes it a terrible idea to go for a swim.

Taro begins swimming for the docks, cheeks bulging slightly from the breath he's been holding all this time. His eyes widen when Silmeria drops suddenly into the water, but he only hesitates firca moment before pulling for the surface again. When his head comes out of the water he releases his breTh with a gasp and then begins sucking in mouthfulls of fresh air. "Found them!" he shouts before bobbing beneath once more.

Before Charis can move, a pair of creatures about three feet long or so fairly shoot from that sandy hollow with frightening speed. Blood-red spines run the length of a creature with huge lobster-like claws and tongued mouth in the front and and a back end that most closely resembles an eel. One lashes out with a claw, grabbing the sith-makar and holding him fast, sharpened spines digging into scaled skin and painfully drawing blood. The other shoots for Taro, but the oruch is quicker and more prepared, and the claw snaps at nothing.

"Alright, I'll help!" Pips jumps into the water. Well, he doesn't really jump. He instead trips, falls face first into the water near Taro, and then panics at the sudden cold from the water. He fires an acid shot in his panic, which goes horribly wide of the target, leaving acid trailing and dispersing in the water.

Charis seems to really be bait, Lizard meat must taste good, because one reef bugger grabs his leg, The Sith Makar manages to kick it away then he gets grabbed at again however manages to swim away towards the dock no worse for wear. Well ok he got chunk bit out of him and a small scrape. More blood, More Prey?

As Charis and Taro head to safety, Silmeria's outline glimmers with a silvery gray radiance as she ducks underwater, levelling her pistol at the reefclaw that had just lost its prey, and squeezes the trigger... only for the gun to utter a muffled *click* and, even more dismayingly, release a clot of bubbles toward the surface. Her eyes widen, and she makes for the dock, pulling herself up and onto the timbers in a sodden, frustrated heap.

Taro has recovered his breath and has his head underwater. He sees the Reefclaws take the bait, as it were. All according to plan. Then he swims to cut off the one that attacked the Sith, slashing it. He can tell something isn't right, but a hit is a hit and the blood in the water appeals to Taro's savage instincts.

Taro intervenes, allowing Charis to swim for safety -- but that just means they trade dance partners. Near the docks, the other reefclaw grabs Charis; the first ten feet below lunges at Taro, scraping claws down his arm but missing a grab attempt entirely.

Pips gains his composure and eyes up his enemies. Seeing Taro strike one of the reefclaws, Pips decides to help focus it down. Firing a blast of acid from his hands, he manages to connect this time around, damaging the creature a little bit. He cheers, "Glub glub glub!"

Charis once again is becoming fish food and is once again gappled by these little beasties, this time instead of kicking away right off the bat, he spins sending out a ray of frost his finger wich goes wide and off its hitting nothing but water.

Perhaps more astounding is, by the cool certainty falling over the other three combatants, it's working.

One, hit by acid and claws, turns to swim off. Bad move, as another parting shot from the oruch leaves it bleeding badly. Instead ... it limps off much more slowly, but still far faster than any of you can swim. The other crushes Charis' arm with strong claws, the spines digging deeper and attempting to crack bone.

Pips sees the fleeing creature and hastily shoots another blast of acid at the creature. However, it only just scrapes the creature, leaving it alive. Pips makes a slight frown, shaking a fist at the creature.

Yeah The Sith-Makar is in a bad spot his blood mixing with the water and ice, he makes a last ditch effort to kick the little beastie off, wich by the love of the dragon gods succeeds. However the strain proves too much. Broken and bleeding the draconic sorcerer loses conciousness.

Following the action from the dock -- with some difficulty -- Silmeria gets to her feet and starts hauling on Charis' rope the moment the sorceror breaks free... And is visibly alarmed at the tug of dead weight at the other end. With a great deal of effort, the Vardamen hauls the Sith onto the dock, dropping to the ground to cover the Sith ust as the sole remaining reefclaw lunges out of the water, missing them both. "Wake up, wake up..."

The other injured reefclaw has fled, but having lost its dinner, the second one turns to its closest source! Halfling! A claw lashes out and grabs the flailing Pips, but he tears free before it can tighten its hold, leaving bleeding gashes on his skin. He can feel himself weakening as the burn of poison begins to work its way into his system.

Pips yelps a bit at the attack. He feels a little sick from the poison. He desperately unleashes a wave of brightly colored light to attempt to blind the creature, but it doesn't seem to affect it, leaving the poor halfling staring at the creature. "Uhmmm... I-I don't taste good, I swear!"

"Okay... Okay.. Okay," Silmeria mutters to herself as she checks over Charis, pausing long enough to shout "GET OUT OF THE WATER!" at Pips. Turning back to the bleeding Sith, she drags a pair of sodden handkerchiefs out of her messenger bag, shaking the worst of the damp off and tearing them into thick strips. Binding Charis' mangled arm, she settles back, checks the man's pulse, and sighs in relief. At least at the moment, all he needs is a healer.

Even as Silmeria is screaming for the others to get out of the water, the reefclaw lunges at Pips again. As before, though, the halfling may not be able to swim, but the flailing as he desperately tries to tread water makes him hard to pin. More blood joins the water around Pips.

Pips feels ill from blood loss. He hears Silmeria yell at him, which helps calm him a little bit. He moves quickly towards her, hoping to escape pincer-claw death.

As Pips frantically makes for the dock, Silmeria draws a glimmering, hook-bladed sword, her face grim as she scans the waters below.

Pips backs away from the creature and blasts it with more colored light, carefully aiming it to not catch Silmeria. However, the creature again shakes off the effects of his spell, leaving Pips perplexed. He's never seen anything shake his spells off like this before!

"ENOUGH!" Silmeria says, the silvery-gray glow flaring, darkening. "YOU AND YOURS ARE NOT WANTED, CREATURE, AND YOUR BROTHER HAS FLED ALREADY!" Slipping in, she turns, sweeping the hooked sword up and around in a vicious arc that rends chitin and splatters ichor across the dock. "IF YOU CANNOT SEE WISDOM, I SHALL ENGRAVE IT UPON YOUR SOUL!"
Only the Grey Harpist knows about the thing's soul, but the inquisitor certainly engraved the wisdom of a sword upon the thing's eel-like body. Slowed by the massive gash across it, it snaps a claw at her, the ugly, blood-coated thing going well wide and throwing more seaweed and blood-laced water on the dock.

No one has ever accused Pips of changing tactics. He blasts yet a third round of color spray at the creature and it finally can take no more, passing out on the dock. "Hurray!"

"Ssssh," Silmeria says, as the weakened and confused creature slumps to the dock, kneeling down next to it and stroking its head. "I know, it hurts, and it's terrifying. Don't worry, though..." With an almost motherly smile on her face for the eel-like crustacean, she sets the point of her sword on top of its head, one hard jerk cracking its shell and delivering the deathstroke. Looking up at Pips, as she holds the reefclaw as it thrashes its ast, she nods to Charis. "Get the healer for her, if you please?"
Pips shakes like a dog, getting as dry as he can to try to keep from catching a cold. He quickly applies a little ointment to his wounds from his pack to help the bleeding. When Silmeria finishes the creature off and speaks to him, he nods cheerfully. "Okie dokie! I will go find some help! If his bleeding gets worse, try this." He throws a bit of the ointment to Silmeria and then dashes off to the town to try to find some help.
For his part Charis is laying on the dock breathing shallowly, broken and bruised but still alive to fight again another day.
